Den
21.04.18. (2006) The regiment was not in the line on Friday, as it was
under-strength. However, it did assist with prisoner processing at its bunker.
Several key members of the regiment, who had been on leave or on other assignments, only rejoined late Friday night and early Saturday.
Den 22.04.18. (2006) Saturday’s weather can be described as “richtiges Sauwetter.” It was cold and rainy most of the day.
During the early morning, Kür. Altmann, Freyman and Hanson worked to repair signals lines, in spite of the rain.
Because of the poor weather, liaison with the regiment on our left was lost. The enemy, a mix of French and Russian units, took advantage of this in a late morning assault, driving 8KUR, 20MG, and JR92 from their front lines. Kürassiere made two attempts to re-capture these positions, but they were unsuccessful due to the small number of reserve troops available.
Around 1700 hours troops of the 8KUR were again put in the southern part of the Abteilung’s Neuville Sektor to assist in an assault on Russian and French positions. Numerous assaults were made, but none were successful. One small unit did reach the enemy trenches, but only briefly. 8KUR withdrew from the lines later in the evening, as the front quieted.
Kür. Hans Bishoff distinguished himself by preparing a wonderful chicken soup, which warmed the cold, damp Kürassiere.
At 2100 the “Regimental Poets and Players” of 8KUR held a Theater- und Liederabend. Noteworthy dramas and poetry readings were performed by Kür. Altmann, Freyman, Hanson, Gaulke, und Jienta. Members of neighboring regiment JR92 and a Schwester vom Roten Kreuz were among the guests of honor: A few even participated in the event. Hptm. Plack and a parade of revelers briefly visited the regiment during the evening festivities.
