Who Are We?

Our group was founded in 1987 by a group of re-enactors with a desire to increase public knowledge of the late medieval period. We portray members of the Household of Lord Grey of Codnor in England of 1471, during the time of events now known as the “War of the Roses”.

What Our Camp is About

Lord Grey's Retinue captures the essence of what a medieval household of 1471 might have been like. Although a household is expected to be well-armed, we do not focus solely on military activities. At public events we demonstrate the social strata of the 15th century, the departments which run the household and the various jobs of each department; cooking, feasting, working on household goods, games, weapons practice, and working with weapons and armor. Women are well represented within the group and our women's household members perform the proper activities of gentlewomen and attending ladies.

Care to join us?

Lord Grey’s Retinue is looking for people who share our passion for correctly educating the public about the exciting period of the late Medieval/Early Renaissance. We work extremely hard to recreate believable portrayals of the 15th century. As a member you would work to meet our strict standards of historical accuracy. However, the effort will be worth the satisfaction achieved with a high level of historical accuracy in a period that is difficult to portray.

New members are sponsored in the group by a member who helps develop their equipment and portrayal. Only a basic kit (i.e. just clothes) is needed for the first year of membership. After the first year of participation, a member has the opportunity to join and advance at their own pace to develop their place in the household along with their kit. There are numerous roles and activities available for all levels. Sound like fun? If so, please contact us and we’ll let you know when our next meeting or workshop is scheduled so we can get to know each other.
